I'm Here!

I'm in England! It took me a long time to get here, I left work at 5pm yesterday to head to the airport and finally checked into my hotel at 5pm today which was noon Canada time. My flight was delayed which then delayed my bus. The good news is that I managed some sleep on both the flight and the bus...so I'm not in bad shape. How I sleep tonight will determine how my jet lag will go I guess. I usually adjust to this kind of stuff easily though, so I'm hoping this time is the same. Dan met me here at the hotel shortly after I arrived. We went for a walk and he showed me the convention center where his conference is. There are also all kinds of pubs and restaurants there, so he sat with me while I ordered and started eating my dinner. I got a chicken, leek & ham pie with chips, peas & gravy. I really wanted a hot meal and this was cheap and tasty!! Dan left just before I was done to head over to the conference formal dinner. I decided not to go, for several reasons. It would have been nearly $60 for a ticket for me, I'm tired, and it likely would have been boring conference talk anyway. I'm happy to be fed and back in the hotel now, which is 7:30. I plan to have a hot shower and get into my PJs and spend the rest of the evening surfing around online and watching TV!

Dan should be starting his talk at the conference in the next couple of minutes. I told him I'd think about him at the right time for luck. He was nervous about this one, which is unlike him. Normally public speaking doesn't phase him, and he's great at it but I guess he was feeling a little less than fully prepared for this talk since he's been so rushed and busy between work and school lately. He also said that there are going to be a ton of experts in the room attending the conference, and they are experts in what he is talking about. He said they also have a reputation for being assholes, so he was really afraid that something he would say would be not quite right and they would embarass him in front of everyone else. I sure hope that doesn't happen and that it goes well for him!

I had a great evening last night with Julie! She came over just after I got home and brought dinner with her. We ate and then she helped me with all my clean laundry, getting it off the clothes line and folding it and even putting most of it away! She then proceeded to clean my bedroom for me, which was fantastic! One of my parents will be staying in there this weekend, and it was pretty much a disaster! It looks much better now! While she was doing that I gathered up the rest of the things on my list to pack and then Julie helped me to put it all in my suitcase and make sure I didn't leave anything out by asking me if I had stuff she'd want. I feel fully prepared for this trip now, I don't feel like I forgot anything. I'm excited for my trip, and relaxed. I have the best Best Friend ever! I know what to expect since I've done this before. Not England in particular, but Europe in general. I'm taking the same overnight flight I took last time, and it worked out well for me. The only difference this time is that I don't have a window seat, I have an aisle. I'm going to ask at check-in if there are any window seats available. I'll be there plenty early, and as long as the flight isn't sold out there is probably a seat to be had. They reserve some seats for check-in, so hopefully one of them is a window.

We'll have a laptop with us and there is internet at both of our hotels, so I'll still be updating here and there and checking email. Hopefully I'll have time in the evenings to load some pictures up too! :D

One of the things I was looking forward to doing with our new high speed was a bit of downloading. Just a couple TV shows here & there and some music. Our bandwidth limit isn't high enough for movies. I had just recently learned how to use BitLord to do Bit Torrent stuff. Our terms & conditions for our high speed states that we aren't allowed to use Bit Torrent, I assumed they just had to say that legally. Turns out that they can actually block that kind of downloading, and they are.

What are my other options for downloading TV shows & music? I'm so out of the loop since I haven't had high speed in over 6 years now!! Last time I think we used Limewire, but I hear now it's bad for viruses & spyware. Help!

Also, I'm realizing that with everything going on lately, I really don't have as much time for LJ as I'd like. I'm hardly ever online at home, because we have dial-up and my friends page takes forever to load. So, I'm going to drop a bunch of communities and do a pretty big friends cut. Nothing personal if you get dropped, I promise!

Here's the deal. If you want to, you can comment asking me to list 5 things I associate with you. Then you take those 5 things and expand upon them in your [livejournal.com profile] bellajellybean associates these things with me:

I love to cook! I find it to be really good for relaxing me and making me happy. It's a creative outlet for me, as I most often just take recipes as rough guidelines and change them to make them suit what I need or what I like. I don't get to cook nearly as often as I would like, as we're hardly ever home during the week. When I do cook, I often make a big batch of something and freeze it individually so Dan & I can take them as frozen dinners throughout the week.

I'm working on my love of baking. I've never really been good at it, and I've always wanted to be. I've started experimenting more lately and trying new things with more and more success. I'm making sure to listen when people give me tips on baking and find that it really helps. I want to keep working on baking and get better and better at it! I see myself practicing a lot once I'm home with kids. :)

Purple is one of my favourite colours. I love it! It's been the colour of several of my bedrooms and was one of my wedding colours. It also looks great on me with my hair & skin.

Chick lit books
Brain Candy at it's finest. I never really read this before Julie started loaning me all of hers, and now I'm hooked and we swap them back and forth. It's a great escape from reality, even if Dan does make fun of me for reading such "fluffy" books.

Julie aslo gave me Knitting...but I covered that in the last one!

Here's the deal. If you want to, you can comment asking me to list 5 things I associate with you. Then you take those 5 things and expand upon them in your [livejournal.com profile] gonzostar associates these things with me:

I see a Nautropath for most of my health concerns. She is so great at working with me and explaining what is going on in my body and how I can help it to not do things or to do things better rather than just shoving some pills at me or brushing off my concerns, which is often the feeling I get from doctors. I've seen her for everything from what vitamins I should be taking overall to PCOS, healthy eating, stomach issues, lack of energy, lack of sex drive, losing my hair (see PCOS) and she has been able to help me every single time. She never makes me feel like I'm wasting her time with my questions or concerns and always has something to suggest to me to try. It also seems like she genuinely cares about me, which helps! I feel like I could talk to her about anything and she'd listen, care and be helpful!

Ultimate Frisbee
I don't play, but Dan does. He's been playing for probaby 5 years now. I go to just about every one of his games in the summer. I love to cheer him and his team on. They are a great group of people and we've made a lot of friends through the frisbee team and league. He plays all year round now, outside in the summer at various fields in town and in the fall/winter/spring they play in one of those bubble domes. I don't go to the indoor games, because it's just barely heated in there. I tried once and it's just too cold if you're not running around. It wasn't enjoyable for me! Dan really loves frisbee though, it's great social and physical activity so I really try to support him however I can with it. I have no desire to play myself though. :P

Curly Hair
I have naturally curly hair and I love it. I haven't always loved it though, it's taken time and work to get me that way. There are still times I wish I had thick straight shiny hair, but not often anymore now that I know how to take care of my hair and work with it. :)

My mom taught me how to knit when I was probably 7-8 years old and I haven't stopped since. I've made tons of things from scarves to sweaters to baby blankets, afghans, mittens, slippers, dish cloths and on and on. I like to have something to do to keep busy with my hands. I tend to get bored just watching TV or riding in the car, so knitting is perfect for me.

Grocery Shopping
I have a sick love for grocery shopping. It's true. I love to make up my meal plan/list and get organized and pick things out and try to get deals and use coupons. I have to do that when the stores aren't busy though, because shopping when it's busy drives me nuts. So I never go on the weekend. I usually go Monday night or on my lunch break during the week.

[livejournal.com profile] tidaldream I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about here and I came in to see if you'd posted yet. Hope you're having a good day!! :)

There has been a bunch of friends cutting going on with my friends list lately, so I figured it was about time I got on board with it too. I've been thinking about it for a while. I'm cutting a handful of people that I just don't feel like I really connected with. Nothing personal. If you want to take this opportunity to remove me from your friends list for whaever reason I give you permission. No hard feelings - no matter how long we've been friends for. It's friends cut amnesty day on my LJ. ;)

This is and will be my slogan:

Back to work for me today after being off on vacation for about 2.5 weeks. It's been great, my last day of work was December 19th. I felt like I was in school again getting this much time off for Christmas. That's the way I love to do it though, I hardly take vacation in the summer, I save it all up for Christmas. I am now officially out of vacation days now until July 1st, but that's okay. It was worth it to have my time off for Christmas. It ensures that I get to see all of my family and friends over Christmas without feeling rushed or stressed about time. And really, that is the most important part about Christmas for me.

However, I'm now back at work with the stomach flu. Any other day, I would have called in sick but I didn't really feel I could do that after having been on vacation for the above mentioned 2.5 weeks. So I'm here, just trying to get through the day. I'm armed with gingerale and crackers.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
I'm working on switching over to re-usable wrapping. I have some cloth gift bags and some cloth I use as wrapping paper. I love love love wrapping gifts though, and my first choice given the above two options is always paper.

2. Real tree or Artificial?
Real Tree. I've never done Christmas without a real tree, it's a huge tradition for me!

3. When do you put up the tree?
Usually sometime mid-December. We like the balance of having it up long enough, but not too long that it starts to die/shed too many needles before Christmas. I think we're going to go a bit early this year and get our tree on the 6th/7th weekend.

4. When do you take the tree down?
Usually sometime between Christmas & New Year's.

5. Do you like eggnog?

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
Anything Barbie.

7. Hardest person for whom you buy presents?
My brother. He never seems to need anything, and he doesn't like presents just for the sake of presents...he wants them to be thoughtful and useful which I totally understand. But it's still hard. ;)

8. Easiest person for whom you buy presents?
Dan - living with someone makes them pretty easy to buy for!

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
Dan's mom always gives weird gifts. One year she gave me this like 3' tall Nutcracker statue that actually cracked nuts. Ugliest thing ever.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
I'm not actually all that into Christmas movies.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I held out until a lot later this year. Usually I start around Thanksgiving (Canadian Thanksgiving which is the start of October). This year I just started this past weekend. I'm hoping it helps me with my budgeting.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Yes, I love regifting.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
Our Christmas Eve dinner. Our tradition is to make a meal out of finger foods/appetizers. It's not always the same, but it's always yummy!

16. Lights on the tree?
For sure, it makes it look like a lot more ornaments and it makes the ornaments themselves all sparkly and pretty! Plus, nothing is better than sitting in a room with only the light from the tree.

17. Favorite Christmas song?
I love it all!! I'm particularily fond of Carol of the Bells and Silver Bells

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Either, as long as we see the people who are important to us it doesn't matter how we go about making tha thappen.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?
I have a star. I grew up with an angel though.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Christmas morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
Family Drama

23. Favorite ornament theme or color?
Snowflakes. It's my whole Christmas decorating theme.

24. Favorite memory of Christmas?
Just the family time and all of the happiness and sharing.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?
A new digital camera and lots of time with the family.

My mom called me with an intersting question. She is buying Christmas presents for some of the residents at my grandma's nursing home. She's on the auxiliary there, and they make sure that everyone gets a present at Christmas, since not everyone has family. One of the women there likes to play Croquinole. My mom asked me what is kind of like that - in that it's easy to set up, and doesn't require a lot brain power to learn/play. I suggested maybe Jenga, but that might not be so great if anyone has shaky hands. What else is kind of like that? I'm drawing a blank!

I'm back at work today after being off sick for the past two days. I started feeling crappy on Sunday afternoon. It generally helps for me if I take it easy and take care of myself when I'm first getting sick, so that's what I did. I sound worse now than I have the past two days, but I'm feeling better. It's moved from the sore throat/tired all the time into mostly just a head cold now. Which still sucks, but doesn't really keep me from being at work. Plus, I don't get paid sick days, so two is kind of my limit unfortunately.

Up until I started feeling sick though, I had a great weekend!

Friday night the girls ([livejournal.com profile] mum2hailey, [livejournal.com profile] bellajellybean & [livejournal.com profile] sengalli) came over for dinner and scrapbooking. Julie & Kate picked me up from work and we headed home from there. Cyndi joined us a while later after a bit of trouble finding the place. We had some pizza, orgasm dessert (first comment, 2c) and birthday cake for Cyndi. Then we moved the party downstairs near the woodstove for scrapbooking. Cyndi had unfortunately forgotten to bring her pictures with her, but she shared her scrapbooking goodies and expertise with the rest of us. I completed six whole pages which I was thrilled with! I still probably have 12 or so pages left to go but the end is in sight finally! I've been working on it for over a year now anyway!

The girls all left just after midnight, and I collapsed into bed. Dan came home shortly after that. He'd been banished from the house for the evening and went to see a movie with Jeremy.

Saturday morning I got up and headed into town to my friend Brennan's place. I left my truck there and she drove us into Toronto for the day. Our mission was to find the Girl Guide store so we could pick up uniforms. After a few false starts (ie getting lost), we made it to the store. $120 each later and they let us out of the store. I did get my uniform though, and some other goodies.

After all of that, it was about 1:30 and we were both starving and in the mood for some real shopping, so we hit up the Scarborough Town Center. Food court first, and then some shopping. We should have stopped after the first two stores though, because we walked the entire mall and didnt buy anything else!

I did get a new purse, a pair of cords, two lace tank tops, a 3/4 length tee, and a knit zip up hoodie that I'm in love with. So that was a success. And again, $100 later they let me leave the mall. ;)

We came back home after that to have dinner with our respective husbands. Then Dan & I spent the rest of the evening cuddling on the couch and watching Big Bang Theory on DVD and him playing Xbox while I knit.

On Sunday, Dan went out to his parents house in the morning while I stayed home and did laundry and cleaned. Then he came home and the weather was shitty, so we spent the rest of the day in a repeat of the night before. I also wasn't feeling great by this point, so I definitely didn't feel like doing anything else and I also threw a nap in there as well as talking to my mom on the phone.

The past two days were spent rotating between napping, watching House (Season 2/3), Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman (Season 4), knitting and checking my email (and little else online since we only have dial-up at home). Now I'm back at work where I'm rotating between the hot water dispenser for my tea and the bathroom to pee out the tea and blow my nose.

My plans for the rest of the week are to take it easy really. We have some fun stuff planned for the weekend, so I'd like to be feeling better by then! We're going to go to our friend Shirley's house Friday night. She wants to do something for Halloween, so we may rent a scary movie and hand out candy at her house since we get zero trick or treaters at our house. On Saturday we're going to hang out with Robin. He's going to come to our place for the night, so we'll pick him up at the train station and bring him home with us. Then take him back to the train on Sunday, and maybe do some shopping in Oshawa while we're there.
