Big Update

I'm so behind on posting!
Had a great long weekend. On Thursday, Dan and I got up early and went to pick strawberries for jam. We came back to the house and made one batch of jam. Figured out that we'd picked tons too many berries, so we tried to go to the store to buy more pectin, but they were sold out. It was Canada Day too, so not much was open. We decided to just hang around the house instead.
On Friday, we went into town for groceries and stuff. It was absolutely mad with people, I guess Dan and I weren't the only ones with Friday off as well!! We came home and picked up the kitties and went back into town so they could go to the vet. I felt so badly, they were so good and just voluntarily got in the carrier, and we punished them with a car ride and a vet visit. We found out that both kittens weigh exactly the same amount, 2.3kg (5lbs). We took them in to see the vet. It wasn't the same guy we saw last time, I guess it was one of his associates. I didn't like him very much. Nano was up first for a check-up and her shots. He took her pulse and listened to her lungs and looked in her ears, at her teeth and at her skin. He also took her temperature. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry at the look on Nano's face when the vet put the thermometer in...I think I was doing both at the same time! He tried to give her a pill for de-worming, but she wouldn't take it. She spit it out three times before he put it in a bottle to give to her at home. Pico was really calm, I'm not sure if she was being well behaved, or if she was just scared shitless!! We brought them back home after that, and they were mad at us for quite a while. It took Nano a few hours to come around and be social, but Pico was pissed well into Saturday about the whole ordeal. I'm way dreading taking them in for spaying in a few weeks...I hope they forgive me! I know they'll be less eager to get into the carrier this time...that's for sure!!
On Saturday, we got up fairly early and started cleaning the house and getting organized for our company. We decided kind of at the last minute to re-organize the front porch. We had the patio set out there that Dan's family got us as a wedding gift, but it was taking up so much room. The table is beautiful, but it made it really difficult to maneuver around the deck, as it took up most of it. So we moved that into the basement and I went into town to take our garbage to the dump and pick up two half-price little wooden tables for the porch. It's a much better use of space, and I'm very happy with how it turned out!!
Mike & Kim showed up just 5 minutes before I got back home. They'd rented a car (a cool blue PT Cruiser) and drove to our place from Toronto. I got to work in the kitchen chopping veggies and stuff, and they took off in the canoe for a ride. They were back half an hour later all soaking wet, turns out a motor boat went by them too fast and too close and they capcized and wound up in the river! They were all fine, just smelled like river and needed a shower and some dry clothes!
bellajellybean and
crownless_king showed up next. We'd just settled onto the porch with a round of drinks when
super_bubbles and
sun_tzu showed up. We made another round of drinks (strawberry daquaris this time). We chatted out on the porch for a while, until Dan started dinner on the BBQ. It worked out well when we ate, the boys wound up out on the porch and the girls inside on the couch. We stayed that way until the bugs drove the boys inside! We chatted a bit more until it was dark enough to put on the fireworks. It was still buggy outside, but really cool to be setting them off in our own front yard!!
We came back inside for a few more drinks and a game of Scattegories. Dan finally played a round that he lost (everyone but he and I were playing on teams, but it was still good to see him lose a game of that!!). After getting up from the game, we noticed that the kitchen had filled with little bugs. The back screen door that had just been installed didn't have weather stripping yet...and the light attracted them all inside. So we all retreated to the basement so Dan could bug bomb them. While down there, we blew up an air mattress for Julie and Jeremy. The air mattress turned out to be full of holes, but we still had the couch so it wasn't the end of the world.
I have to back this up a bit. Much joking had been going on all night about Joy and Nano. Nano seemed to really take a liking to Joy, so I told her I was going to count the kitties before she left, because she couldn't have Nano! Just as Joy and Nick were leaving, Nano snuck out and ran half way up the hill leading out of our road. She really was trying to go home with Joy!!
We all went to bed and when we got up in the morning, Julie and Jeremy had left. We had quiche with Mike & Kim and then they left as well. Dan and I went into town and got him a haircut and a few last minute items for his trip. We came back home and made one last batch of jam (3 in total) and froze the rest of the berries. We both went to bed early last night, as it had been a long weekend.
This morning, I got up early and went into town for an adjustment. Dan slept in, but was up and eating breakfast on the porch by the time I got home again. I finished helping him pack and we were out the door by about 9:30. We drove to Whitby where we stopped for gas and a new calculator for Dan. Then we continued on to the airport. We found Dan's ticket window, and then went for lunch at the airport. I left him to go through customs at 12:30, his flight was at 2:15. He's gone to New York all week for a GE training course. It was his first flight ever, so he was excited and nervous. I drove home after leaving him at the airport. I read for a while, then dozed with the kitties on the couch for a while. Dan called here around 6:00pm to say that he'd arrived okay. He said that his trip was fine. He had a problem at the X-Ray machine at the airport because there was a fork in his work bag that he'd forgotten about. Luckily it wasn't one of my nice ones, because they threw it out! He was just going on a little plane, so they took the whole airplane worth of people onto the tarmac in a bus and he boarded the plane from a little staircase going down to the tarmac. He said it was just a little commuter plane. They had to circle Laguardia for 40 minutes due to rain before they could land. There was an airport shuttle service that picked him up and drove him to the GE Training Centre in Crotinville. He was just killing some time before dinner was to be served in the dining room. He's staying at a facility that's like GE university. He's in class 10 hours/day until Friday and they provide his accomodations and all of his meals and everything. He's done class at 5pm on Friday and his flight leaves at 8pm. He's hoping to not have any problems that would cause him to be late for his flight!!
I was just chatting with
boukyou on AIM and telling her that it was so quiet and lonely in the house, and she offered to come and stay with me! She was going to be coming next week, but we just moved it ahead so she can keep me company while Dan's gone! I'm going to pick her up from the Greyhound station in Peterborough at 4:40pm tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll have to work Wednesday or not, I'm scheduled to, but I might be able to change that. I'll have to talk to Bodil tomorrow. On Friday, we'll head into Toronto as Caron has some shopping she wants to do. We'll pick up Dan from Toronto airport at 9:37pm on Friday and then drive to North Bay from there. Caron's mom is coming to North Bay this weekend as well, so that will work out perfect (almost like we'd planned it that way or something.) ;)
I'm so excited now! :)
