Dec. 1st, 2005 01:29 pmI had a very nice birthday evening last night!
I picked Dan up from work and we headed downtown for dinner. I don't go downtown very often in Peterborough. The one way streets and lack of parking usually discourage me a bit, and I need to stop letting them do that to me because there are some really nice places down there I'm missing out on! Anyway, we were downtown early, around 5:30; so finding a parking spot for dinner was no problem at all! We went into Curry Village. It was really cool; I'd never been in there before. The restaurant is kind of in the basement, and we got a table up against the window so my eye level was street level and that in itself was pretty cool! We ordered dinner, we started with Samosas - which were yummy - and for the main course we had some spiced rice, butter chicken, aloo peas (which was potatoes, onions and peas in a curry sauce) plus an order of Naan bread as well. It was delicious! I really have no idea why I thought I hated Indian food for so long, but I'm so glad I went to that Sikh wedding this summer and was forced to eat Indian food for 2 days straight, because I realized I don't hate it and in fact I love it! It was a great birthday dinner anyway! :)
After dinner the plan was to walk to the movie theatre and see the Harry Potter movie. I was having some...um...nether region issues that would have made sitting through a movie (after sitting at my desk all day) quite unpleasant, so I came up with a plan B. I wanted to go to the dollar store for a few things. I'm in charge of center pieces and decorating for my company Christmas party, so there was that. Plus, I went through my Christmas wrapping supplies from last year and found that I was short on a few things, so I wanted to pick that up too. On a tip from Julie, I went to the dollar store in the north end. It was still a bit of a bust, I can't believe that yesterday it wasn't even December yet and the dollar store was almost out of Christmas stuff!!! If they didn't put it out like after Thanksgiving before Halloween maybe we wouldn't have that problem! At this rate the Valentine's stuff will be out before Christmas!!! I guess they make more money if they completely sell out of the stuff, regardless of how soon before the holiday that is. It still irritates me, but I guess what kind of service can you expect when you're only paying $1/item, right? So that was fun anyway, I spent about $30 combined on decorations and gift wrapping goodies.
We made a quick stop at the grocery store to see what the options were for a birthday cake for me. There was nothing appealing that was affordable in the already baked section, so we picked up a mix and a tub of frosting and Dan baked that up for me when we got home. I also picked up a big bag of Epsom salts and I had a long soaking bath while Dan made my cake. I was hoping to get a bit of pain relief from the bath, but really no such luck. I enjoyed the bath anyway though and settled in to open my presents once I was out. From Dan I got an MP3 player that I opened last weekend, and last night he gave me the new Tragically Hip 2 disc best of set - it's awesome! From my parents I got a mug warmer for my desk at work and inside my card was a subscription card for Light & Tasty Magazine and a note from my mom saying that if I wanted to send it away I could, otherwise she would buy me something else or give me some money for clothes. I haven't decided which option I'm going to take yet...I need to think about it a bit; more to come on that later.
I ate my yummy birthday cake Dan had baked for me and tried not to think about the points. Yesterday was a point free (but not totally go nuts - still think about what I was putting in my mouth) day. The cake was yummy! It was my favourite; vanilla cake with vanilla icing. I had leftovers in my lunch today for which I did count points!!
I spent the rest of the evening going through my already purchased Christmas presents and evaluating what was there and then making up a master list of what still needs to be bough. Yes, this is fun for me! I also really wanted to start wrapping presents last night, but I ran out of time since I would have had to clean up the mess again as well. The only good place we have to wrap presents is the kitchen table, and we need that for eating too!! ;)
All in all it was an enjoyable evening and a very happy birthday!! :)
